If you think that a bigger percentage of adults in Kenya are educated, then you need to think again, because research has shown that there exist a certain percentage of adults who are illiterate and uneducated. This article looks at the disadvantages of uneducated adults and the possible causes of action.

Disadvantages of lack of education in adults

1. Unemployment: Without the basics of education, it becomes very difficult to gain meaningful employment. Most employers will require their employees to have the relevant educational papers and without these you can possibly only get manual jobs that are labour intensive.

2. Non-school going children – Uneducated parents often don't take their children to school because they don’t see the reason to. Such parents usually engage their children in domestic work like farming, looking after cattle, early marriages for their daughters etc. This leads to illiterate children who will also have children who won’t attend school and the cycle continues.

3. Abuse in families – Many people especially women who are uneducated, find themselves in abusive relationships and without any basic education they have no say. Take for example a woman who gets a loan from a micro finance institution only for the husband to take all the money and misuse it. The woman is left helpless and with a loan to repay.

4. Failed Businesses – Without a basic education, it is not easy for one to run a successful business, because they maybe cases of dishonest employees, signing wrong documents etc.
A bigger percentage of adults especially from the rural areas are uneducated and this is really impacting on the poverty levels in our country and also our development goals. The government has recently started off the adult education programme in Kenya but a lot needs to be done for it to be successful. For

starters there should be more adult education tutors and a way of making it compulsory should be instituted.

Adult education is a must for this country to develop and education empowers individuals hence making them more self dependent and also aware of their rights.
