INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
• Answer three questions only
• Question one and two are compulsory
• In question three choose only one of the optional set texts you have prepared on
• Where a candidate presents work on more than one optional text, only the first one to appear will be marked
• Each of your essays must not exceed 450 words.
• All answers to be written in the answer booklet provided.
Candidates should check the question paper to ensure that all pages are printed as indicated
and no questions are missing
Answer three questions only
1. Creative composition (Compulsory) (20mks)
Either
a) Write a composition ending with the following sentence.
From that day I vowed never to accept food offered by strangers
OR
b) Write a story to illustrate the saying; “A stitch in time saves nine”
2. THE NOVEL: THE RIVER BETWEEN BY NGUGI WA THIONGO
(COMPULSORY) (20mks)
Using Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s “The River Between” for illustrations write an essay supporting the
statement: “Waiyaki is a victim of circumstances.”
3. Optional Set Texts
Either,
a) The Short Story (20mks)
Macmillan (Ed), Half a Day and Other Stories. With illustrations from Saida Hagi-Dirie
Herzi’s “Government by Magic spell”, show how a community reaps what it sows.
OR
b) Drama (20mks)
John Ruganda Shreds of Tenderness.
Write an essay refuting Odie’s view that life in exile is that of “sausage and bacon.”
OR
c) The Novel (20mks)
Velma Pollard: Homestretch
Using illustrations from Velma Pollard’s Homestretch write an essay on the problems a
black person is likely to encounter while in America and England.
