1. (a) Distinguish between;

ii. Diffusion and osmosis

iv. Glycosidic and peptide bonds
v. Growth and development (5 marks)

(b) Name three different polysaccharides and two types of lipids and state a function
for each. (5 marks)

2. (a) Describe three functions of membrane. (3 marks)
(b) Differentiate between smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum in terms of both
structure and functions. (7 marks)

3. (a) What are the main differences between mitosis and meiosis. (3 marks)
(b) By use of simple diagrams explain the laws of segregation and independent
assortment. (7 marks)

4. (a) Describe the properties of water which result from its being a polar molecule.
(4 marks)
(b) Describe the properties of carbon that make it the central component of organic
compounds. (6 marks)

5. By use of a labeled diagram describe the internal structure of a dicot leaf; and explain
how this structure is related to its main functions (photosynthesis and gas exchange)

6. Discuss the various mechanisms that have evolved in different groups of plants that
prevent self pollination while ensuring cross pollination. (15 marks)
