Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions.
1. Describe the representation of Africa and the African in Western writing from
Greco-Roman writers, through to the post-colonial writing on Africa.
2. Discuss, with examples, the presentation of the African identity and culture in
Huxley's The Flame Trees of Thika
3. "As a Black man in the Diaspora, V.S. Reid's presentation of Africa seeks to be
different from that of non-Black expatriate writers" Do you agree with this
statement. Provide a reasoned position for your answer by comparing The
Leopard with any other text studied in this unit written by a non-Black expatriate
writer.
4. The atmosphere of alienation and loneliness that pervades Heart of Darkness
serves to foreground the speaker's attitude towards the African environment.
Discuss.
5. Discuss how the African climate and the indigenous people affect any three of the
following characters in The Heart of the Matter: Scobie, Louise, Helen and
Wilson.
6. Do you agree with Daily Alai! 's assertion that The White Maasai represents
experiences and adventure in "contemporary Kenya" ?
7. Discuss the contribution of this unit to your understanding of the placement of
Africa in the world through expatriate literature and steps you recommend in de-
scribing these representations.
