An analyst has been asked to prepare an estimate of the proportion of time that a turret

lathe operation spends adjusting the machine with a 90% confidence level. Base on

previous experience the analysis believes the proportion will be approximately 30%. The

analyst uses a sample size of 400 observations.

i)
What is the maximum possible error that will be associated the estimate.

ii)
what sample size would the analyst need in order to have the maximum

error be no more than +5%. (take z=1.65)

(7marks)

2.
a)
Outline the users of work study.

(5marks)

b)
Describe the following

i)
Micro motion study

c)
A metal working industry has been working over the last 5 years. The rate

of work per cycle and standard has not been set. The management decides

to use work sampling to derive time standard.

The following information was gathered working time and idle time 480min

Working time in percent

Idle time in percent

Total allowances

From the information given compute standard time.

5.
a)
State the advantages of work sampling over work-study.

b)
An operator works for eight hours a day. A study shows that he was idle
15% of the day and worked the remaining time. His performance is
110%. Records show that he turned 420 pieces of acceptable quality
during the day. Find the standard time per piece.

c)
A furniture making factory contained a group of 13 machines. The
management of the factory decided to find the percentage of time spent on
the following activities.
