Basic Mechanics
Topic; Centre of Mass

1. A system consisting of two masses connected by a massless cord moves along the x-axis. A 0.4-kg mass is at x=2 m while a 0.6-kg mass is at x=7 m. Find the x coordinates of the centre of mass.

2. Find the distance from the centre of the earth to the centre of mass of the earth-moon system if the earth-moon separation is 380000km and the mass of the earth is 81.3 times the mass of the moon. To what fraction of the earth's radius of 6370 km does this distance correspond?

3. Assuming a dumbbell shape for the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule, find the distance of the centre of mass of the molecule from the carbon atom in terms of the distance d between the carbon and the oxygen atom. Use 12 u for the atomic mass of carbon and 16 u for the atomic mass of oxygen.

4. The separation between the centres of the hydrogen and chlorine atoms in the hydrogen chloride molecule (HCl) is about 0.13nm. How far from the centre of the hydrogen atom is the centre of mass of the molecule? (the atomic masses of H and Cl are 1 and 35 u, respectively)

5. A 45-kg boy is sitting on one end of a see-saw while a 15-kg girl sits on the other hand. They are 4m apart. How far from the 15-kg girl is the centre of mass? Where should the system be pivoted? Neglect the board's weight.

6. A thin uniform rod of length L and mass M1 has a uniform disk of radius a and mass M2 fastened to the rod so that the disk and rod are coplanar. The centre of the disk is at the rod's end. Find the distance of the disk's centre from the centre of mass of the combination.

7. Verify physically that the medians of an equilateral triangle intersect in a point (the centre of the triangle)
