In the 1990s, when Pope John Paul II was still able to travel anywhere at will, a reporter
asked him why he was making so many trips to Africa. He said he liked coming here because
families were strong . Anyone who assumes families are the same all over the world may not
grasp why the Pope said that. There are many reasons why Kenyan family life is remarkable.
There are also reasons why it needs more attention.
We all establish priorities. Many people in developed nations have succumbed to a mentality
that puts their family at the bottom of a long list. When that happens, care for the elderly
takes on strange forms- the strangest being the kind of nursing homes typical of the
developed world.
On her first trip to Europe, Mother Teresa of Calcutta noticed the problem immediately. She
went to a nursing home. It was full of old people. She asked one of the sisters: “Why do
these people sit staring at the door all day?”4
“they are waiting for someone from their family to come and visit, but the families never
come. ”Loneliness is the greatest plaque of the developed world. There is one city in
Germany, for instance, where 60 per cent of the population lives alone.
When I was a university student in New York City, I once visited a luxurious nursing home.
A friend drove me over in his car so could visit the folks there, just to give them some
company. I can still feel the grip one nimble old lady, grabbing my arm. Her relatives had
stuffed her in this place to get rid of her and then disappeared. She whispered in desperation:
“Put me in the boot of your car and get me out of here. “Admiring the exquisite furnishings, I
naively muttered.
“But this is such a nice place!”
“Stick me in the boot and dump me on the side of the road somewhere. Just get me out of
here. This is hell. “I never did anything. I could not think of any way to help her. Over the
years, her loneliness has haunted me.
I cannot imagine this kind of thing happening here. Kenyans are in no great danger of
neglecting their elders anytime soon. Still, trends are beginning to appear that will lead that
road. To understand this, look at three fundamental habits that make or break families:
Spending time together, listening to each other and keeping money at the bottom of the
priorities list.
Keeping money in perspective is hard for both the rich and the poor. It is a question of
attitude. Husband and wife have to keep reminding each other . From time to time, every
family goes through a crisis. It can be a positive experience though and bring everyone
together. Financial crises, as a rule, are not a disaster for family unity. Greed is.
Listening to each other comes naturally –but only if you turn off the TV. How can you and
your family members listen to each other during meals if everyone is captivated by a football
match, cartoons or a soap opera?
Spending time together sounds simple. It is simple. But it only happens when both husband
and wife make up their minds to do it. Globalization has many effects. The most common is
to put professional work at the top of the priorities list.
Look at yourself and your work habits. You may see this happening to you already. Ask
yourself honestly. Does my family come first?
Perhaps you work hard to get money for your family. That does not mean you put your
family first. You must ask yourself. How much time do I spend with my children? When I
am at home, am I there for them or am I so exhausted from work that I may as well spend the
night at the mortuary?
These things may seem trivial, but it is the little details that make a difference. When we put
our families first, we do the one thing Kenya needs most to prosper.5
