1. Define the following terms;

2. Mr. Cheptul has approached you saying that he struggles expanding his sermon outline
to make it strong, understandable and persuasive.
(a) Explain with relevant examples any 5 supporting materials you would propose to
him that he can use to amplify, explain, prove or apply your main points to make
them understandable and persuasive. (10 marks)
(b) Some illustrations are more effective than others. Using Robinson’s analogy of the
overlapping circles, show with examples the characteristics of the most effective
and the least effective illustrations. (5 marks)

3. Roy B. Zuck (1991) in his book Basic Bible Interpretation defines a narrative as “a
story told for the purpose of conveying a message through people and their problems and
situation”(p. 128).
(a) Name and briefly explain the three elements found in any narrative. (3 marks)
(b) Describe three kinds of narratives used in the Bible. (2 marks)
(c) Discuss how you would go about interpreting biblical narratives. (2 marks)

4. The goal interpretation is application.
(a) Explain the mistakes you would avoid in application. (3 marks)
(b) State four principles that will guide you when applying the message of the
Bible. (4 marks)
(c) Analyze the four-step methodology of interpretation. (8 marks)

5. In preaching, the preacher may choose as one of his/her purposes to be persuasion.
Discuss the various aspects the preacher may need to take into consideration in seeking
to persuade his audience through the source, the message, the channel and the audience
variables. (15 marks)

6. Correct interpretation calls for a proper understanding of the genre used.
a. What is the difference between a parable and an allegory? (4 marks)
b. How you would identify parables in the Scripture? (6 marks)
c. Discuss the principles that you would use when interpreting parables in
the Scripture? (5 marks)

7. Every sermon must have a purpose
a. What do you understand by the term purpose as used in homiletics? (2 marks)
b. In what ways does the purpose differ from a sermon idea (3 marks)
c. Using an example, show how one can determine the purpose of their sermon
the Scripture? (4 marks)
d. Explain the 3 main ways through which a preacher may accomplish his/her
purpose in a sermon? (6 marks)
