QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS
a. What are the advantages of a multipoint line connection over a point to point connection? (2 Marks) b. Draw blocks diagram showing both an intelligent switch and a basic approach to switch design. (3 Marks) c. Briefly explain the three types of cabling technology which may be used in a 100-Mbps Ethernet network. (3 Marks) d. With the use of a suitable diagram show how FDDI maintains service after failure. (3 Marks) e. What forces are making the traditional design approach less appropriate for many of today’s networks? (2 Marks) f. Differentiate between Baseband and Broadband coaxial cable. (2 Marks) g. Suppose you add two new devices to an existing five device network. If you have a fully connected mesh topology, how many new cable lines are needed? If, however, the devices are arranged in a ring, how many new cable lines are needed? (1 Mark) h. In the context of the network design process, explain the meaning of: i. RFP (2 Marks) ii. OSI (2 Marks) iii. Baseline (2 Marks) i. State giving reasons the type of internet hardware you would most likely use for each of the following tasks: i. Linking a LAN in a building to another LAN in the next building so that data frames can be selectively be forwarded from one LAN to another. (2 Marks) ii. Linking a LAN in a building to another LAN in a building situated at the other side of a field so that a number of data frames can be exchanged between the LANs. (2 Marks) j. Explain the checks that can be performed if a user has a problem with network printing. (3 Marks) k. In the OSI model, what is the difference between physical and logical addressing? (1 Marks)

QUESTION TWO – 20 MARKS
Assume you are designing a network for a university which has 20 lecture rooms, one administration department, 40 teachers rooms and one management department. Each lecture room and Teacher room is having a computer, while administration and management department has 20 computers, 10 printers and 2 FAX machine each. Administration is working as the central office which maintain all databases and main server. The main server is connected to all computers and servers of other departments. Give answers of the following, based on the network defined above:
a. Draw and explain the best suited physical and logical topology for the network specification. (6 Marks) b. Justify the need of each hardware device you may use in the network at different locations. (2 Marks) c. Which cable is best suited for this company? Compare merits and demerits of the available cables to justify your answer. (4 Marks) d. Which operating system is best for this company? Justify your answer. (4 Marks) e. Explain the best hardware and software that can be used in the network to implement the security. (4 Marks)
QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS
a. Explain the following terms as applied to routers. (2 Marks) i. Non-adaptive routing ii. Adaptive routing
b. Assume there is heavy traffic on both a “Token Ring” and CSMA/CD LAN. On which system is a station more likely to wait longer to send a frame? Justify your answer. (2 Marks) c. Describe the main elements of link state routing? (4 Marks) d. Estimating the cost of a network is complex because many factors are not immediately obvious during the network design process. What are some of the costs that a network designer need to consider? (6 Marks) e. Show with the help of a diagram the relationship of IEEE Project 802 to the OSI model.(6 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR – 20 MARKS
a. Switches and Brouters are used for networking. Under what circumstances would each of these technologies be used? (2 Marks) b. Describe four categories of test equipments that can be employed to diagnose a network problem. (4 Marks) c. Compare the OSI model with TCP/IP? Give a brief description of the functionality of its layers above the network/internet layer. (7 Marks) d. In a traditional Ethernet, built using co-axial cable, there are rigid requirements that govern the maximum size of the network. Produce a description, accompanied by a sketch diagram, to illustrate a maximally sized network. (7 Marks)
