Comprehension passage
The Mandera Town attack in the wee hours of Tuesday in which 14 people were killed by Al-Shabaab militants is a grim reminder about the need to step up surveillance and enhance security in the northeast. The ease with which heavily armed bands of fighters have been breaching the border is shocking.
Even more alarming about this particular incident is Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Nkaissery’s admission that the security force had absolutely no information about an impending attack.
The increasing violation of our territorial integrity is a blatant mockery of the security forces’ vow to protect lives and property against internal threats and external aggression. According to the minister, the attackers sneaked in from Somalia and raided a residential area at 1.30 am. There is an emerging pattern here that should worry everybody. Most of the victims were non-local quarry workers and it is the second similar attack in the area. It simply means that Al-Shabaab has intelligence that can only be obtained from wayward local people.
The terrorists appear to have a clear agenda: To drive a wedge between Kenyans along ethnic and religious lines. The frequency with which these attacks are happening can only mean that country has either lost control over large swathes of its northeastern territory or that its ability to secure the nation has been severely undermined. This calls for a quick mobilization of the resources at the country’s disposal to confront the challenge. And there is no shame in seeking assistance from allies and well-wishers to bolster the effort.
A good start would be to saturate the region with the best security personnel to gather intelligence, hunt down and neutralize foreign terrorists and their allies, and block further incursions.
