Term 2-2017
Opener exam

You are provided with the following;
•solution M hydrochloric acid solution.
•Solution N,containing 8.8g per litre of sodium hydroxide.
•Solid P which is 0.5g of an impure carbonate.
You are required to determine:
a)Concentration of solution M in moles per litre.
b)Percentage purity of the solid P.

PROCEDURE 1.
a)Fill the burette with sodium hydroxide, solution N.
b)Pipette 25cm^3 of of hydrochloric acid solution M in a conical flask.
c)Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate.
d)Record the results in the table below.

final reading
Initial reading
Volume of N used

1)Determine the following;
a)the average volume of the solution N used.(2mks)
b)The concentration of solution N in moles per litre. (Na=23,O=16,H=1)(2mks)
c)concentration of solution M in moles per litre. (2mks)

PROCEDURE 2.
a)Use a measuring cylinder to pour out 100cm^3 of solution M in a 250cm^3 beaker.
b)Add all of solid P and stir the mixture.
c)Allow the reaction to continue for about 4minutes.
d)Label the solution obtained in the above process Q.
e)Fill the burette with solution N which is sodium hydroxide.
f)Pipette 25cm^3 of solution Q into a conical flask.
g)Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate.
h)Record your results as shown in the tàble below.

Initial reading
Volume of N used

2)Determine the average volume of the solution N used. (3mks)
3)Calculate the following:
a)Moles of hydrochloric acid in 25cm^3
of solution Q. (2mks)
b)Moles of hydrochloric acid in 100cm^3 of solution Q. (2mks)
c)Moles of hydrochloric acid in 100cm^3 of the original hydrochloric acid solution M. (2mks)
d)Moles of hydrochloric acid that were used up in the reaction with solid P. (2mks)
e)Moles of the carbonate that reacted with hydrochloric acid. (2mks)
4)Given that the RFM of the carbonate is 72,calculate the:
a)Mass of the carbonate that reacted. (2mks)
b)Percentage purity of the carbonate solid P. (2mks)

2)
You are provided with 8cm^3 of solution Z.The solution contains two cations and an anion.Carry out the following tests on Z and record your observations and inferences accordingly.

a)Add 15cm^3 of 2M sodium hydroxide to all of the solution Z provided and shake well.
Filter the mixture into a conical flask.
Retain both the residue and the filtrate.
Record your results accordingly.

b)Divide the filtrate obtained above into three portions.
Add 2M sodium hydroxide dropwise to portion one until in excess.
Record your observations appropriately.

Observations. Inferences

c)Add aqueous ammonia dropwise to portion two until in excess.

observations. Inferences

d)Add 3 drops of potassium iodide to 2cm^3 of the filtrate.

Observations. Inferences

e)To 2cm^3 of the filtrate add 4 drops of barium nitrate followed by 1cm^3 of dilute nitric (V) acid.

Observations. Inferences

f)Scrape the residue from the filter paper and place it in a boiling tube.Add about 4cm^3 of dilute nitric (V) acid and shake well until all the solid has dissolved. Add aqueous ammonia dropwise to the solution obtained until in excess.

Observations. Inferences
