Supermarkets serve more than just an avenue to shop

People love to shop, especially Kenyans. If you happen to be in one of the supermarkets on weekend evenings, you will be shocked at the amount of traffic walking into and out of the stores. I am often mesmerized by the long queues at the pay point, a sure sign that Kenyans love to shop.

But even with the upsurge of prices of items, people seem not to care much. They seem to shop the more. Or is it that the disposable income for the majority of Kenyans have also increased? I have been wondering lately.

However, many people love shopping in the supermarket because of the price factor. Compared to small shops, they are relatively cheaper and you could save a few coins here and there. If you normally shop in bulk, the better for you because you end up saving a lot.

These mega stores serve as entertainment venues for children. When parents don’t have enough money to take their kids to carnivore or other expensive places, they normally take them to these shopping malls just to have them entertained. Kids love to watch, to see with their eyes. They love supermarkets because of the variety of eye striking colors the items present to them. They love to stroll in the middle of those long rows between shelves just to feed their eyes with the beautiful aura of the supermarket.

Oh! They also love to push the shopping trolleys in the supermarket. Some stores have trolleys that kids can sit on while the parent is pushing. All these are fun activities for them. It can be a great way of saving if you don’t want to take them to those expensive places in the city.

Another category of people are those who come to look around-window shop in other words. They don’t

necessarily buy something-even if they do, it is always one item. They just love to walk around and compare prices. Have you done that before? Sometimes you just want to experience that feeling of shopping and so a supermarket would be the right place for you to relieve tension.
