Summary

BLA3111 Second Language Acquisition Notes

Brief Overview

Second language acquisition is the process of learning a language once the mother tongue or the first language has been established. It is therefore the process of learning another language in addition to the native language. Although we refer to it as “Second” language it refers to any language learned after the first language. It therefore incorporates the learning of third, fourth or subsequent languages (Gass and Selinker 2008).

However second language acquisition does not only refer to the learning of a subsequent language to that learned in childhood, but it is also a term used to refer to the scientific discipline devoted to studying that process. Gass and Selinker (2008) in reference to it as a discipline aptly define SLA as “the study of how learners create a new language system.” Other introductory texts reveal similar definitions (e.g. Ellis 1994, White 2003). A close examination of the various definitions of SLA reveals a concern about learners and learning. The field of SLA addresses the fundamental questions of how learners come to internalize the linguistic system of another language and how they make use of the linguistic system during comprehension and speech production. (Van Pattern and Benati 2010).
