QUESTION ONE
i) Assume you are planning to interview shoppers in a shopping mall about their views on
increased food prices and what the government should do about them. In what ways might you
motivate shoppers to cooperate in your survey? (5 Marks)
ii) You decide to take a telephone survey of 40 families in kariobangi exchange area. You want an
excellent representation of all subscribers in the exchange area . The subscribers come from
three distinct groups. Explain how you will carry out this study in order to meet the criterion
above. (5 Marks)
iii) Distinguish between the following:
(a) Parametric and non parametric tests (2 Marks)
(b) Type 1 error and type 11 error (2 Marks)
(c) Null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis (2 Marks)

You are set to conduct a study on the factors affecting the girl child education in samburu District.
Required:
i) List the specific objectives for this study (3 Marks)

ii) Determine the sampling criteria given that samburu district is divided into four divisions:
Samburu east, samburu West, samburu South and samburu North. (6 Marks)
iii) What research design is best for this study and why (4 Marks)
iv) Assuming that the study found out that poverty and female genital mutilation affect the girl
child education, write an abstract for the study (7 Marks)

i) Discuss the importance of conducting a literature review (5 Marks)
ii) Discuss the potential sources of literature review (5 Marks)
iii) John is conducting a research on the effectivennes of customer care strategies for banks. He has
come up with the problem statement below.
Customer care is a strategic tool for retaining customers through a combination of efforts where
customer’s disaffection with the company is reduced to the bare minimum. Virtually every major
company, especially those in the service industry have a customer care department with the sole
aim of keeping the customer happy.
This study seeks to find out the effectiveness of customer care strategies. Specifically, the study
sets to find out the effectiveness of customer complaints resolution, customer relationship
management and service delivery as strategies in customer care.
Required: Critique the above problem statement (10 Marks)

iv) Tom is interested in conducting a research on the factors that prompted activists to fight for the
repeal of section 2(a) in 1990’s. Since he does not know the activists very well, describe how
he should conduct the sampling process. (5 Marks)
