Answer all questions:

1. (i) Discuss two types of non-probability sampling and two types of
probability sampling. [8 marks]
List the advantages and disadvantages of each sampling design you have
discussed. [2 marks]

2. Explain the importance of:
(a) Operational Definition
(b) Hypothesis
(c) Condition and
(d) Statement of the Problem; in research and show their relatedness. [5 marks]

3. (i)Describe four characteristics of qualitative research design. [1 mark]

ii)State and discuss the three forms of qualitative research. [5 marks]

4. Describe in details two procedures (research designs) that may be used to
determine intervention (treatment) effects. [8 marks]

(ii) Explain the potential problems in using these procedures. [2 marks]

5. (i) Identify the steps that are followed in gaining knowledge through the use
of scientific method. [4 marks]

(ii) Identify the important characteristics of scientific method, and explain why each
of these characteristics is important. [3 marks]

(iii) What role does theory play in the scientific research enterprise? [2 marks]

(iv) Identify the four objectives of science and explain what each is attempting
to accomplish.[2 marks]

(v) Critical researchers have argued against scientific research approach. Discuss
four (4) of their arguments or views defending scientific research approach for
each argument to answer them i.e. indicate the issues they are overlooking [8
marks]

6. (i) Discuss what is a research design. [4 marks]

(ii) What are considerations necessary in a research design? [4 marks]

(iii) Discuss the various sections, which would be included in your research
proposal. [4 marks]

(iv) What is the difference between a thesis (a research report) and a
proposal? [2 marks]

(v) Discuss the importance of literature review in a research. [4 marks]
