INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer ALL questions.
1. Calculate the work done and the power expended when a plough is pulled with a force of
3500 N through a distance of 2500 m in 2 hours.
2. Name the three sources of power most used in agriculture in your area then explain what
makes the farmers choose each source.
3. Farm implements can be classified according to a wide variety of criteria. State one such
criterion and give the different groups of farm implements obtained and give an example
of implement in each group.
4. Assume you work for a company dealing with farm machinery for hire and a farmer asks
you to estimate for him the cost of tilling his 15 hectare field. Using the following
information:
The implement to be used is a two-bottom mouldboard plough of rated width 105
cm and mounted on a wheel-type tractor working at an average speed of 5 km/h
with an effective field efficiency of about 65%. The new cost of the mouldboard
was ksh 10000 and it is expected to stay in use for 12 years. It is used for about
150 hours in a year. Its cost of repair and maintenance per hour is estimated at
0.08% of the new cost.
The new cost of the tractor was ksh 1 500 000 and it is expected to stay in use for
15 years. On average, it is used for about 1000 hours in year. Its cost of repair and
maintenance per hour is estimated at 0.01% of the new cost. The tractor uses an
average of 3 litres of diesel per hour costing ksh 90 per litre and its driver is paid
sh 200 per hour. The interest rate charged by local banks is 16% p.a.
The company has a policy of charging a 10% profit for each hire operation.
Estimate:
a) The time required for the tilling operation to nearest ½ hour
b) The cost of the operation
5. Mention some farm implements used for the same operations and explain the conditions
in which each implement is more appropriate than the other and why.
