Question One
a) Define the terms
(i) Digital
(ii) Analogue
(iii) IC
(iv) Logic probe [4 Marks]
b) Explain two advantages of digital systems over analogue systems [4 Marks]
c) Explain the terms SSI and LSI as used in digital ICs [4 Marks]
d) Define the terms TTL and CMOS. Explain any three differences between TTL and CMOS circuits
[8 Marks]
Question Two
a) A full adder adds two bits (A and B) and a previous carry in (Cin) to produce a sum (S) and a carry
out (Cout). Develop the truth table. Find the standard SOP for both outputs. Draw the circuit of a
full adder using 2 input gates only. [12 Marks]
b) Simplify the circuit in a) above using a K-maps. Redraw the circuit. [8 Marks]

a) State any two applications of counters [4 Marks]
b) A counter goes through the sequence 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0,1,

(i) Name the counter
(ii) Assuming it is synchronous develop the required tables and draw the circuit [16 Marks]
Question Four
a) Define the term sequential logic [2 Marks]
b) Draw symbols for
(i) The negative edge triggered JK flip-flop with active low clear input
(ii) The positive edge triggered D flip flop [4 Marks]
c) Using a circuit diagram explain the operation of the SR flip-flop [8 Marks]
d) Simplify the boolean expression below and draw it using NAND gates only
F = A(B’C+BC’) +A’(B’C’+BC) [6 Marks]

b) Draw a four-bit register using D flip-flops and explain the operation [8 Marks]
i) Define the terms SISO and SIPO
