INTRODUCTION

Cabbage are very vital as they are the source of vitamins that are utilized by our body.cabbage production has been practiced in different parts of Kenya especially in the highlands.cabbage can either be grown for commercial or for domestic use.cabbages for commercial purposes are usually grown on large scale while for domestic use are grown on small scale.there are different types of cabbages which are grown in the country.
Some of the cabbage varieties includes;the golden Acre, red acre, late flat dutch,Pak Choi white stem,Copen- hagen and many others. below is the procedure used when planting cabbage.


SEEDBED PREPARATION

select the site and measure a length of 1 meter by 50 centimeter.

dig the selected site to remove thrush and tree roots

Carry out secondary cultivation to break the clods and then tertiary cultivation

Prepare either raised seedbed or sinked seedbed.

Level the seedbed and make shallow furrows.

Measure the plot again to ascertain the measurements.

Since the cabbage seeds are very tiny,place the seeds in a small container containing very fine soil.
pierce a small hole at the bottom of the container and pour the mixer of soil and seeds on the shallow furrows made.

Cover the seeds lightly with soil and water the seedbed immediately with a watering can.

Apply mulch if possible and remove it immediately the seeds starts germinating.

SEEDBED MANAGEMENT
Pests;prevent the seedlings from weaver birds for instance with a scare crow or any other convenient method.

Protect the seedling from direct sunlight.this can be done through shading.

Water the seedlings regularly to prevent them from drying up.

Weeding;remove all the weeds from the nursery by uprooting them.CAUTION! be

careful not to uproot the seedlings.

Thinning;remove the overcrowded seedling so as to reduce competition for food, water and sunlight.

Hardening off;this is to prepare the seedlings for hostile field conditions.

TRANSPLANTING

Dig planting holes before the onset of the rain

Add manure into the holes and mix with the soil thoroughly.

Water the holes before planting

Transplanting should be done early in the morning or late in the evening.

Transplant seedlings when they are about 4.5cm to 6cm high.

After planting water the seedlings again.

FIELD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES.

Gapping;replace the seedling that dried up during planting

watering regularly that is in the morning and evening

Pests.control pests by using appropriate pesticides

Weeding. it can be done using panga , jembe or either by uprooting.


HARVESTING

Harvesting should be done between 3 months to 5 months depending on the variety.

Production should be 1.5 to 3 tonnes per acre.

CONCLUSION

In a nutshell,cabbage production is very important as it can be as a source of income. Additionally its nutritive value is very important for our bodies. But cabbages requires a lot of care for them to provide good results.
