Taking Care of Our Environment

Taking care of our environment simply means, looking after our surroundings. In creation, everything else was created first and then man was created last. What does that tell us? It tells us that we are the creation’s care taker.

So we are supposed to take care of the whole creation, that is, vegetation, animals and everything. The whole creation co-exists with one another. I remember in school we used to learn about how this eats that in a cycle. For example, a cow eats grass; man eats cow, the cow produces manure and grass grows again and so on. And so it becomes a cycle. When one part of the cycle is interrupted, the whole cycle is affected.

Nowadays we are interrupting that cycle in many ways. Firstly we are cutting down trees, in other words known as deforestation. We are cutting down trees and in their place constructing saw mills, factories and commercial houses whose sewage is drained into the rivers and we use the same water for drinking. We are also not practicing the techniques used to avoid soil erosion.
Cutting down of trees brings global warming, which is the main cause of the uncontrollable weather that we have been experiencing like floods and long periods of excessive heat. This also causes water sources to dry up leading to droughts and famines. Use of chemicals on plants and animals has made the matters worse, which has led to terminal diseases like cancer. Bad health and high mortality rate is also caused by the pollution of water sources by sewage. Soil erosion has brought about low food production since our soil is not fertile any more.

It is quite evident that we need to rectify all the above and change our ways if we want to take care of our future generations.

There was a policy which used to be very effective some time back. The policy of 'cut one tree plant two'. That is a saying that is no longer followed but it should be taken seriously. We also need to start practicing techniques that avoid soil erosion. Then we need to turn to organic farming and avoid these chemicals as much as we can. Another thing to take to great consideration is avoiding polluting our water sources, and then we will enjoy good health.

In conclusion, taking care of our environment is not our politicians’ responsibility, it is everybody’s responsibility. It would be a very good idea if we can plant a lot of tree nurseries and take advantage of rainy seasons when they come, to plant trees and get back the glory we have lost. Our homesteads should also go back to the way they used to be, full of fruit trees like mango trees, avocado trees and so on. We need to do our best to keep our environment green.

Instead of man being the environment’s caretaker, he has become its destroyer. To prove this, destroy a forest and leave it for some time. You will notice that the forest will rehabilitate itself without man’s intervention. But man will come back and destroy it again. We need to understand that if we don’t take care of our environment; our environment will not take care of us and vice vasa.
