When we sleep, every one of us snore at some point. But when it becomes too much, it affects the quality of our sleep, or even ruins our relationship with family members as well. If your snoring keeps your partner awake, prepare for the worst in your relationship.

A friend was telling me, a couple of weeks ago, that she never gets enough sleep at night because of her husband loud snoring. They have, even at some point, considered sleeping in separate rooms because the situation is getting out of hand.

Research shows that people who snore have too much of throat or nasal tissues, which are prone to vibration during relaxed breathing. However, evaluating how and when one snores can be of great help in knowing whether the situation can be controlled by self or by a second party, in this case a physician or an otolaryngologist(ENT specialist).

However, the fact is, not every remedy out there can work for everyone. It may therefore require that one experiments with different solutions to finally eliminate the habit completely.

It calls for patience and also a lifestyle change for a successful outcome. A sleep diary kept by your non-snoring partner may be ideal at this stage. This one helps in monitoring your snoring patterns over a period of time, so that one can diagnose the underlying issue.

Exercise can help tone the muscles on your throat especially if you are working out your arms, legs, or even pronouncing vowels sounds a,e, i,o,u for a number of times a day. Since snoring is caused by the vibration of throat tissues, singing can be helpful because it increases muscle control in the throat and soft palate hence reducing snoring.

If you smoke, you must quite because tobacco blocks airwaves by irritating the nose and throat membranes. Drugs or alcoholic

substances relax the muscles in the throat when you sleep, interfering with breathing system.

Bedtime remedies include sleeping on your side, keeping bedroom air moist or clearing nasal passages.

Avoid sleeping on your back because nature''s force of gravity tends to pull your tongue and soft tissues downwards blocking airwaves.

The presence of dry air in the bedroom environment can irritate the nose and throat membranes. A humidifier may be used in this case.

Some medical conditions have been known to stimulate snoring, e.g nasal or sinus problems that block the air pathways. Nasal decongestants or nasal strips may be used to aid in smooth breathing.
