The cost of living has gone up and this is affecting everybody. It is worse on students in campus and colleges who do not have the chance of having any jobs and have to rely on parents to give them pocket money and some on HELB loans. This is however not enough to cater for all their needs. It thus becomes imperative for students to find other ways of earning an extra coin.
Here are a few ways how this can be achieved.

1)Working online.
The internet is readily available in most campuses via wi-fi. Working opportunities are many on the internet mainly by writing articles. Some Kenyan sites like Kenyaplex and its sister site, kenyahow and many others provide opportunities for one to earn money and get paid via M-Pesa which is available to any Kenya. One can also start a blog and when it generates traffic earn by advertising via services such as Google Adsense. Some international sites such as elance also pay for article writing.

2)Start a small business.
A student can earn money by engaging in a small business that does not require a large amount of capital. This can be selling clothing items, shoes especially sandals, jewelry and others to fellow students. This is a good venture since there is a readily available market in the form of students.A photocopying/scanning/printing business is also a good idea.Students always have a lot of typing, printing and photocopying to be done in the form of assignments and notes. One can carry out this in their hostel without having to pay for rent. These businesses have the advantage of not having overhead costs thus enabling the student to make a profit.Selling airtime to students is also viable. Movies and series are popular amongst students.Acquiring a wide range of these and sharing them with students at a fee can also earn one some

money.

3)Using skills and talents.
Students posses many talents and skills that one could make use of to make money.A student who has skills as a DJ can sell his services to functions within and around the campus to earn an extra coin.Plaiting and braiding hair is big amongst college students and if one has this skill or talent, they can use it to earn an extra coin. One can even charge slightly less to encourage a stream of customers amongst fellow students.Web design, computer and phone repair, installing computer software ,programming are also skills that one could exploit to earn some money.Although for a few, modeling can also be an option especially commercial modeling for those who are interested.I know of a fellow student who has managed to earn quite a good sum from this.
I also happen to know of a student who had training in auditing and was able to take up some work at an audit firm while still schooling.

There are many other ideas and activities that one could engage in to earn some money and these are some of them.Having financial independence is key to ones success in later life.
