In Kenya, elections are held after every five years.During the elections, citizens choose the leaders that they like. Many people offer themselves as candidates for various elective posts. This creates competition among aspirants. The competition may be healthy or unhealthy.

In Kenya, unhealthy competition is the order of the day. Each candidate leaves no stone unturned to ensure that he/she is elected. Some aspirants use legal, noble and acceptable ways to win elections. However, most aspirants use illegal, harmful and unacceptable tactics to win elections. As we all know, politics is a dirty game. The situation is even worse in Kenya.Aspirants use the divide and rule tactics to emerge victorious in elections. This does more harm than good to our country and the citizens.Aspirants turn the competition into a murky affair. It becomes cat-throat competition. The hunter becomes the hunted and vice versa. It becomes a war between 'us' and 'them'.The aspirants tell the voters that 'they' are opposing 'us'. That should not be the case.A competition should be fair.It should be peaceful and free from any form of violence. It should be within the confines of the law.Aspirants should embrace healthy competition. They should view healthy competition as the best way to give voters a chance to choose good leaders. It is not opposition but healthy competition.

I have always believed in healthy competition. It works so well in business where it enables the customer to get the best product, the best service and the best value for his/ her money. In opposing each other,it demonstrates that there is democracy.Just like in business, healthy competition can also work in politics. We should actively encourage a political culture where voters have a variety of aspirants to evaluate. Some aspirants have a record in public service.Others have a record in the private sector. Why not let

the voters evaluate their individual records and choose the best?It is all about a level playing field for all the players in the competition. There should be no discrimination. That is what democracy is all about. This will ensure we get a government of the people,by the people, for the people.

Dear Kenyans, let's embrace healthy competition in politics, from the aspirants to the voters. It is through healthy competition that we will be able to get the right leaders. As for the aspirants seeking various elective posts, please use your influence to unite Kenyans, not dividing people.Let us all live in peace, love and unity.

Let the people decide.
