The new ridiculous traffic regulations are a major draw back to the matatu industry, as well as the private transport sector. It is, however, humorous how some people use these rules to get away with their bad habits.

A certain gentleman drinking beer till very late at a pub in town, one day, told his wife that he was too drunk to risk getting arrested driving home in that state. The wife was convinced and responded that it was okay with her, oblivious of the fact that her hubby was out with another girl and were planning to spend the night together. This is just how some creative kenyans are using the traffic rules as an opportunity to fuel their irresponsible behaviour.

The other day, i was reading the newspaper and this story got me laughing my ribs out. A middle aged man, when he realized the risk he was taking for drunk-driving, decided to put on the white priest collar so that the police could not suspect him of anything. And for sure, when he was flagged down at the point of police check, one of the police manning the road block commented-"habari gani Mchungaji?" Meaning, how are you Pastor? They did not understand that he was just a drunk man trying to pass for a man of God.

This Christmas, it's going to be even tougher for people traveling upcountry. A destination they normally charge Ksh400 will be charged Ksh800. They say the extra fare is supposed to compensate for the fines they will be slapped with once they are nabbed bending the rules. This got me thinking how these matatu drivers and touts are always so anticipating to break the traffic rules.

So, if you are planning to travel this season, be prepared to pay for your bus fare plus any extra

cost incurred when the driver commits a traffic offense.
