Let’s talk about integrity. Integrity is when you enter into a matatu(Van) and sit on your seat, not sharing a seat with another person. You have a right to do so, irrespective of what the tout is saying or thinking about you. So, make a resolution this coming year that when you are traveling, you will only get into a matatu that has empty seats so that you don’t have to share. The problem with us Kenyans is not that we don’t know our rights, it is only that we don’t know how to implement them.

Integrity is when you are stopped by a traffic police officer while driving and then you refuse to give bribes. Some of these officers are notorious for doing this and will take advantage because they know that most Kenyans are afraid of the police. We were once driving in town-my brother was the one behind the wheels, when a traffic cop stopped our car. I noticed that my brother was literally shaking the moment he spotted the officer. The first thing he asked me when he saw the officer was, “uko na fifty, meaning do you have a fifty shilling note?” I told him I was not going to give him. So the officer came onto the driver’s side, ran some few checks and then let us go. I was however expecting the “weka gari kando” orders.

Another incident occurred when a certain couple, full of integrity were driving down town. The police stopped their car and accused them of driving when the traffic lights were still red. However, the couple were on the right, in fact other motorists were also driving at that time and the lights had turned green. It was clear that this man wanted to be bribed, unfortunately, for him, he

had preyed on the wrong people.

So this policeman took them to court and the couple were very ready. It is true that the Lord always fight for the righteous. When they arrived in court, somehow witnesses were called and the case was thrown away because the policeman was wrong.

We should all learn to stand our grounds. Let us not be intimidated with people or even authority when we know very well that we are doing the right thing.
