Question One
a) You are required to conduct a research entitled “Non performing loans among micro- finance
institutions in Kenya ”
i) Write two objectives of the study (6 Marks)
ii) Identify a possible research design for this study. State why the design is suitable.
(4 Marks)
iii) State and briefly explain an appropriate sampling method to use. (5 Marks)
iv) Briefly explain an appropriate method of collecting the data in this study (5 Marks)
b) Describe the importance of background of the study, statement of the problem and title of a
study. (10 Marks)
Question Two
(a) (i) Explain the meaning of the terms reliability and validity as used in research. (5 Marks)
(ii) State and explain three possible threats to internal validity in research. (5 Marks)
(b) Focus Group Discussion is one of the methods used in data collection. State when it is suitable for
use in a study. (10 Marks)

b) Using appropriate examples, differentiate between a coefficient of determination and a coefficient

a) With the help of relevant illustrations, explain what you understand by the term Likert Scale as
used in research. (5 Marks)
b) Explain five factors you would consider before constructing a useful questionnaire for a research to
be conducted. (5 Marks)
c) Using an appropriate illustration, distinguish between dependent and independent variables.

a) Explain why literature review should be done in a study. (5 Marks)
b) Explain five limitations of interviews as method for collection of research data. (10 Marks)
c) A report released by the city council in 1992 claimed that the average net worth of families living
in Nairobi was at least sh. 300,000. A random sample of 100 families from the city in the same
year produced a mean net worth of sh. 288,000 and a standard deviation of sh. 80,000. Test the
council’s claim at 2.5% significance level. (5 Marks)
