Geo-Engineering is a necessary practice

Introduction

There is a lot of evidence that report the negative effects that global warming has on earth. Geo-engineering is a large scale and deliberate intervention to attempt and correct this menace in the Earth’s climatic system. The scientists argue that it is possible to achieve this through carbon dioxide removal which involves greenhouse gases removal from the atmosphere and management of solar radiation whose concepts involves actions to cause the Earth absorb less solar radiation. The concept though not proven, are promising. Human beings have the responsibility of being caretakers and gardeners of our Earth, such a technological intervention should be tested to strengthen the positive effects it has and minimize the negative effects it would have.
Discussion
Ideally, the idea of geoengineering has provoked more controversy than research it has gained. Looking at the research issues that are making it halt, there are fewer questions on the chances that global warming will be minimized. Most countries and critics argue geoengineering politically and economically. These are the main barriers to the possible benefits of geoengineering. It is argued that some major worldwide companies want to participate in this endeavor so that they would gain recognition globally while others want to maximize their profits. In politics, it is assumed that countries want to gain popularity through geoengineering research (Hamilton, 2013). May be that’s the reason the United States of America and the Republic of China, military superiority they seek?
There are further questions on who should finance the research and whether the practice should be observed by the scientists alone or the United Nations should come in. These questions extend to enquiring who will take charge if the hoped for results are attained in a research. The policies by human beings take blame for the current condition of

the climate. It does not end there, their same policies are holding hostage a research that would help save the earth from the mess it is in. It does not mean that these questions should be left unanswered and research begins, no. There is need to respond to these questions and provide a system that will oversee the protection and respect of the scientific evidence and protection of the interests of the vulnerable and poor (Hamilton, 2013). The research is needed as scientists have faith in it. All it calls for is global strategies demonstrating goodwill for the future of this earth and for the children and generations to come. Political, military and economical desire for superiority should not be the reason the research is stagnant.
Comparisons have been made between the climatic problem with poverty or public health. Some critics have argued that the three will never be ended nor will they be solved (Revkin, 2013). Despite some truth in the statement, there is still need for action. A rational human being is responsible for showing concern for the poor and taking action against social calamities. For instance, these critics should pay attention to the current developments that have been made against communicable diseases in the world. The levels have been reduced massively. Therefore, geoengineering promises a cooler globe, a better tomorrow, and the individuals should act rationally and make the broad decisions that target to ensure reduction or possible elimination of global warming. In positive living, when there is that every single chance that shows hope, one should not stay in the comfort zone and await suffering, the chance should be taken.
The Earth is the human beings home. Having being the main cause of global warming, there is need that they adopt mechanisms that aim at the restoration of a cool home to live in. the concept of continually postponing and leaving the cost to generations to come is very mean. The home needs restoration and human beings through supporting the scientists should step up and see that at least, something is being done to bring back a cool Earth. Though most have no scientific skills on the effects of global warming, they have a clue that the Earth will keep warming if nothing is done to eliminate or reduce the greenhouse gases which are on a constant rise (Scruton 2012). It is possible to control this by penalizing on the use of fossil fuels in a time when they are the only source of energy. People would wake up and race to the streets if this was to happen because they are not willing and are not in a position to spend less energy than they need. Why then should the same people oppose an idea that promises to ensure that they have their energy normally though global warming is controlled?
Scientifically, there are only two options in climate control. It is either cleaner energy which is freely available in the globe or counterattacking of the effect of carbon emissions through geoengineering (Scruton 2012). The countries in this world are developing fast; the developing countries feel that they are in a race to meet the levels of the developed countries. Development is directly promotional to the use of energy. With this put into consideration, the source of energy that they mostly rely on is fossil fuel. Therefore, the emissions of the greenhouse gases will continue. In fact the pollution projections report that these emissions will only increase (Davenport 2012). There is absolutely no need to wait up to the moment when the human beings are desperate to take action and support geoengineering then. The research should be upgraded, supported and funded now since the emissions are not pausing as the debate on what should be done continues.
The Earth’s polar ice sheets shall melt and the world’s driest and hottest regions will grow food no more when the planet’s temperature will rise by 2 degrees Celsius (Davenport 2012). Currently, if were to happen that it gets there today, China and the United States would take the largest share of the blame of why the Earth would no longer support human existence. PricewaterhouseCoopers reported in November 2012 that the only way the 2-degree rise would be avoided was to cut the carbon intensity by 5.1% every year beginning then to the year 2050. Analytically, it meant that growth and development would be halted and kept freezing for 37 years. The mere mention of this seems absurd to most but it emphasizes the need to control global warming. Spending quality time and finances would be the best solution to venture in unlike being dormant for more than thirty years. Going by the economic concept of opportunity cost, geoengineering offers the better solution. China and the United States should lead other developing countries in an attempt to convince the rest of the world to adopt, appreciate and enact geoengineering.
Conclusion
The Earth’s climate has unintentionally been altered by human actions. Scientists have done a good job in investing intentional actions to cool the overheated planet. The primary intention of scientists is clear. The policies by human beings are the barrier to the desired climate. The main challenges for this are costs, ethics and responsibility and lastly political viability. The other minor challenges can be achieved through well governed researches on geoengineering.
It is evident that the side effects of global warming are severe. They are no match to the challenges facing geo-engineering. The practice is therefore recommended with proper guidelines set to govern how it is carried out. Rational thinking and global goodwill is essential in establishing strategies that will bring the best out of scientists for the sake of rescuing the Earth which is man’s home. The vulnerable need protection while at the same time, other ethical considerations are attended to. Finally, geo-engineering is essential by considering the amount of greenhouse gases being released to the environment.
