Use the following constants where necessary
a) Acceleration due to gravity g = 9.81 m/s2
b) Universal acceleration due to gravity 6.67 x 10-11N.m2/kg2
c) Mass of the earth= 5.98 x 10 24 kg
d) Radius of the earth= 6.38 x 106 m
e) Hectare = 100m x 100m = 104 m2, 1 cm = 10mm, 1L = 1000mL, 1 Kg = 1000g
QUESTION ONE
a) (i) Convert 45.3 cm to its equivalent measurement in mm. (3 Marks)
(ii) Change a speed of 72.4 miles per hour to its equivalent in meters per second. (3 Marks)
(iii) The density of mercury is 13.6 g/mL. What is the mass in kilograms of a 2 L commercial flask
of mercury? (3 Marks)
b) The lecture theatre of a university is 40 ft wide and has a door at a corner. A lecturer enters at
12.00 noon through the door and makes 10 rounds along the 40 ft wall back and forth during the
period and finally leaves the class room at 12.50 p.m. through the same door. Compute his average
speed and average velocity. (5 Marks)

c) A certain vector has a horizontal component of -30 units, and a vertical component of 50 units.
Calculate
(i) The magnitude of the vector (3 Marks)
(ii) The angle the vector makes with the horizontal (3 Marks)
d) A wave travels along a stretched horizontal rope. The vertical distance from crest to trough for this
wave is 13 cm and the horizontal distance from crest to trough is 29cm. What are
(i) the wavelength and (3 Marks)
(ii) the amplitude of this wave (3 Marks)
e) A rock is thrown downward into a well that is 8.85 m deep. If the splash is heard 1.20 seconds
later, what was the initial speed of the rock? (4 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
The position of a particle moving on X-axis is given by x = At^3 + Bt^2 + Ct + D
The numerical vales of A, B, C, D are 1, 4, -2 and 5 respectively and SI units are used.
Find:
(a) The dimensions of A, B, C and D, (4 Marks)
(b) The velocity of the particle at t= 4 s, (4 Marks)
(c) The acceleration of the particle at t= 4s, (4 Marks)
(d) The average velocity during the interval t = 0 to t = 4s, (4 Marks)
(e) The average acceleration during the interval t = 0 to t= 4 s. (4 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
Find the sum of the following displacement vectors (20 Marks)
= 5.0 m at 37 o N of E
= 6.0 m at 45 o N of W
C = 4.0 m at 30 o S of W
= 3.0 m at 60 o S of E

a) A plane drops a package of emergency rations to a stranded party of explorers. The plane is
travelling horizontally at 40.0 m/s at 100 m above the ground.
Find:
i) Where the package strikes the ground relative to the spot it was dropped (3Marks)
ii) The velocity of the package just before it hits the ground. (4Marks)
b) A projectile is fired with an initial speed of 113 m/s at an angle of 60 o above the horizontal from
the top of a cliff 49 m high. Find:
(i) The time to reach the maximum height, (2 Marks)
(ii) The maximum height, (2 Marks)
(iii) The total time in the air, (3 Marks)
(iv) The horizontal range and (3 Marks)
(v) The components of the final velocity just before the projectile hits the ground. (3 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE
a) (i) Differentiate between transverse and longitudinal waves (2 Marks)
(ii) Draw a well labeled wave (4 Marks)
b) A train has a whistle, which emits a 400 Hz sound. You are stationary and you hear the whistle,
but the pitch is 440 Hz. How fast is train moving towards or away from you? Take speed of sound
as 340 m/s. (4 Marks)
c) An echo sounder in a ship produces a sound pulse an echo is received from the sea bed after 0.4s.
Assuming the speed of sound in sea water to be 1500 m/s. Calculate the depth of the sea bed
(4 Marks)
d) The time keeper of 110m race stands near the finishing tape and starts his stop watch on hearing
the bang from the starting pistol.
i) When should he have started his stop watch? (2Marks)
ii) Give a reason for your answer to (i) (2 Marks)
iii) Calculate the error in his timing assuming he makes no more errors speed of sound 330
