Exam Year:2012

KENYA MEDICAL TRAINING COLLEGE-ELDORET, DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL ENGINEERING,2013 YEAR II SEMESTER 1, MACHINES & UTILIZATION C.A.T, 1. a) Describe using a diagram the general construction of a D.C machine. b) Using the diagram in (a) above, describe the general operation principle of a dc machine. c) An eight pole armature is wound with 480 conductors. The magnetic flux and the speed are such that the average e.m.f generator in each conductor is 2.2v and each is capable of carrying a full-load current of 50A . Calculate: (i) The terminal voltage on no load. (ii) The output on full load. (iii) Total power generator on full load. Assuming the armature is lap-connection. 2. a) Describe using a diagram the armature reaction. b) A four pole wave-connected armature has 48 slots with 10 conductors each and is driven at 600r.p.m. If the useful flux per pole is 30mWb, calculate the generator e.m.f. 3. a) Define the following terms as used in machines theory (i) Conductor (ii) Pole pitch (iii) Armatur
