(ii) This is a CLOSED BOOK exam. No reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
(iii) No mobile phone allowed in the exam room (make sure to switch it off and leave it with the invigilator if you carried one).

QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) [30 MARKS]

a) After a successful completion of this course, you are approached to advise an organization on automating their offices. What relevant features of the computer would you emphasize in your advice? [ 4 marks]

b) Both a Local Area Network and the Internet are important in an institution of higher learning such as a University. Justify this statement. [6 marks]

c) Spreadsheet software uses both formula and functions in calculations. Distinguish between a formula and a function. In your answer, give a distinguishing example between the two. [4 marks]

d) Distinguish between system software and application software. Give at least two examples of each. [4 marks]

e) Electronic mails are a good way to communicate via the Internet. Explain any two security measures you should take when responding to emails. [2 marks]

f) Explain the terms volatile and non-volatile in relation to computer memory. [2 marks]

g) Explain why software is the most important component in your computer. [2 marks]

h) Explain the importance of a word processor application. [2 marks]

i) Explain what you understand by the following terms.

a) Explain any FIVE Care and maintenance of computers practices. [10 marks]

b) Computers are prone to security threats from the outside world. Your friend can also pose a security threat to your computer; explain measures you would take to protect your data and programs stored in your computer. [6 marks]

c) Explain the difference between email and instant messaging in computer technology. [4 marks]


QUESTION THREE [20 MARKS]

a) Using a well labeled diagram, explain the role of the various functional components of a computer. [10 marks]

b) Explain the following elements of the function shown below. What is the result of the function when executed in MS Excel? [5 marks]

c) Explain the proper procedure of shutting down a computer. Why is it important to follow this procedure when you can simply switch off the main socket? [5 marks]


QUESTION FOUR [20 MARKS]

a) In computer networks, explain what communications media is. Explain the two major types of communications media and explain at least two examples of each. [ 14 marks]

b) The Internet is considered of great importance in a learning institution. Other than the advantages the Internet provides, explain any THREE negative impacts of the Internet in an institution of higher learning. [6 marks]

QUESTION FIVE [20 MARKS]

a) Your department chairman has asked you to prepare a presentation on the application of computers in a learning institution such as a school you will attend for your teaching practice. Explain any FIVE applications you would include in your presentation. [10 marks]



b) Explain how a simple IF function works. Write the syntax for the simple IF function in MS Excel. [4 marks]

c) Distinguish between the following types of software. Give at least ONE examples of each.
(i) Operating system software and utility software [3 marks]

(ii) Software suite and Integrated software [3 marks]
