In the global economy, every company must compete against customer choices coming from
everywhere and anywhere. The single most visible result of this hyper-competitive environment is
rapid commodization.
Growth and profitability are expected and increased shareholder value is demanded. Doing the right
thing is becoming more important than doing everything. Therefore, organizations are becoming better
focused and more specialized. They evaluate each activity to determine if and how it provides a unique
competitive advantage.
The risk attached to lengthy and slow-moving logistics ‘pipelines’ has become unsustainable, forcing
organizations to look again at how their supply chains models are structured and managed.
Organisations that deal with and logistics and supply chains have to know that the key to survival in
these days is on changed conditions through ‘agility,’ in particular by the creation of responsive supply
chains systems. A distinction is drawn between the philosophies of ‘leanness’ and ‘agility,’ and the
appropriate application needs to be implemented. Basically supply chain must be lean. Supply chain
specialists need to up their game to enable their organisations remain relevant
