SECTION A: BUILDING CONSTRUCTION I
Answer any two question from this section in the space provided.
1. (a) (i) Differentiate between the following terms as used in construction:
I. Environnmemt
II. Built environment.
(ii) State three environmental and three physical considerations before starting a construction project.

(b)With the aid of labelled sketches explain the following types of foundation:
i. Deep strip foundation;
ii. Raft foundation.

(c) Explain the following methods for dewatering foundation trenches
i. Well point system ;
ii. Elecrto- osmosis

2. (a) (i) Explain the following functional requirements of a wall:
I. Strength and stability;
II. Durability
(ii) State four factors to be considered when designing a wall.
(6 marks)
(b) Outline two functions of a pier in wall construction.
(2 marks)
(c) With the aid of labelled sketches illustrate the construction of the following alternate courses of a brick wall.
-1.5 brick thick wall in flemish bond;
-1 brick thick wall in English bond

3. (a) State two purposes of each of the following in solid ground floor construction giving two examples of materials for each case:
i. Hard core
ii. Damp proof membrane.
(4 marks)
(b) With the aid of a labelled sketch explain the construction of a suspended timber floor
(7 marks)
(c)(i) List four factors affecting the choice of floor.
(ii)Outline the procedure of laying an oversite concrete floor slab
(9 marks)

4. (a) With the aid of a labelled sketch explain the method of bridging openings by use of an arch. (8 marks)
(b)Compare and contrast between stone masonry and brick masonry
(6 marks)
(c) Outline six ways of preparing a surface for plastering
(6 marks)

5. (a)Explain how to take proper care for the following drawing instruments:
i. T- square;
ii. Compass.

(b) Construct a plain scale 30mm equal 10mm,40mm long to read 2mm.Show readings of 24mm on the scale.

(c) Draw the following types of lines used in drawing:
i. Centre line;
ii. Hidden details
iii. Outline;
iv. Long break line
v. Short break line
vi. Projection lines.
(3marks)
(d) (i) Construct a hexagonal polygon given that the distance across flats is 60 mm.
(ii) Construct a tangent to circle from a point F, 80 mm from the centre of the circle . The diameter of the circle is from the centre of the circle . The diameter of the circle is 40 mm.

6. Figure 2 shows a pictorial view in isometric projection of a block. Draw the block in first angle orthographic projection viewing from direction X.

To a scale of 1:20 draw sectional B-B showing the substructure upto D.P.C level given the following information:
-225 mm thick stone wall
-strip foundation 675 mm wide and 225 mm thich
-Depth of foundation below the ground level 1000 mm
-300 mm thick hard core.
-150 mm thick concrete floor slab.
-50 mm blinding layer.
-Assume any other relevant information.
