Mobile phone etiquette
The other day I was attending a funeral service at a church in town.
The atmosphere was somber as the congregation listened to the son of the departed man read the eulogy tearfully. Then in the middle of the reading a phone shrilled out the melody of a pop song. The reading stopped and all eyes turned to the front of the church from where the strident sound was coming. One of the church elders could be seen searching frantically in her bag for the offending gadget, but she seemed to be taking too long to locate it. Finally she found it and disconnected the call.
Calm returned and the reading continued. As the young man recounting his father’s last moments, most of those in the congregation were weeping. This was a man they loved, a man who helped the community. Then once again the shrill melody rent the air.
Everyone frowned and looked at the woman murderously. This time she removed the mobile phone from her bag, stood up and walked out of the church. All this time the phone was still ringing. I found myself cursing and wondering whether such people, who do not seem to have a conscience, should be made church elders in the first place.
The son resumed reading the eulogy, but it was clear to all of us that he was being affected by the obvious lack of respect for his departed father. “ Why can’t people just switch off the phones for a one hour service?” I found myself whispering rather loudly to my immediate neighbor. I had hardly finished asking my question when we heard loud laughter from outside. The church elder who had walked outside was now talking loudly about a wedding she had attended. The reading had to stop again. This time the priest stood up, took the microphone and requested everyone to switch off their mobile phones.
However as he walked back to his seat, his mobile phone started ringing. I could not stand it any more and walked out in protest.
As I sat outside the church waiting for the service to end, I wondered why the social change was lagging so far behind the technological change in the use of mobile phones. It seemed to that while mobile phones have become so popular in their use, they have also become a menace by causing disturbances. Although I applaud the mobile phone technology, I strongly feel that users need to learn some mobile etiquette.
One of the things that everyone needs to know is that how one uses their mobile phones reveals a great deal about one’s character. Most of the calls received on a mobile phone are personal and private. A lot of what is said if not therefore for the public ear.
The following are some matters of etiquette that I feel mobile phone users should observe.
To start with, it is impolite to take calls in lifts, libraries, restaurants, theatres, hospitals, waiting rooms, places of worship, toilets and other public places. Nor should one take personal calls during meetings.
Every time you take a call you should maintain a distance from the other people and not talk too loudly to the point of drawing everyone’s attention. You should also avoid becoming emotional to the phone, laughing or screaming.
Some mobile phone users select very loud ringing tones on their phones.
When such phones start ringing, they disrupt everyone’s peace. It is true that there are certain people who have to take calls even in public places. These include doctors, emergency crews and security personnel. Such people should either turn off the tone or turn on the vibrate alert option, or select low ringing tones.
The government has already passed a law that people should not take calls while they are driving, except if the driver is using a hands-free facility. There are many other places where the use of mobile phones is prohibited. These include parliament, petrol station, banks, aero planes and hospitals. But many people still use their phones in most of these places, in total disregard of all advice not to do so.
Finally although mobile phones are undoubtedly very useful to the users, there should be a concerted effort by all concerned to educate users on do’s and don’ts of mobile phone telephony.
