QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

GenKen Ltd is a publicly listed corporation that designs power and automation solutions for its clients spread all round the country. The organization considers itself a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The organization has approximately 12000 employees spread around the 8 provinces of Kenya. The organization is constantly developing new automation technologies to help its customers optimize their productivity. These solutions include simulations, control and optimization strategies, the interaction between people and machines, embedded software, mechatronics, monitoring and diagnosis. The organization is looking to develop a common industrial IT architecture for real-time solutions across the business enterprise.
a)
Discuss the three types of systems that arise in the design of the required solution stating their unique characteristics. (10 marks)
b)
Describe the design phase activities of the SDLC of the above project. (10 marks)
c)
Do you think the above situation requires an expert system? If so, describe the envisaged expert system. (10 marks)

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a)
The M.I.S described in the case in question (1) contains an office system component. Discuss the technologies that will support that office system. (6 marks)
b)
Compare and contrast the hallmarks of decision support systems and expert systems. (6 marks)
c)
Operational information systems that track and record the organization’s activities tend to suffer from a myriad of problems during implementation whereby they fail to meet the data processing requirements of the various managers who rely on their outputs. Discuss the ingredients that such a system will be expected to contain in order to avoid such problems. (8 marks)

Discuss the main features and outputs of five of the software modules of a financial accounting system using commercially available illustrations.(10 marks)
b)
Discuss the various ways by which the M.I.S. can aid the strategic management process. (10 marks)

Describe the organizational structure of a typical M.I.S function in an organization identifying the various professionals and briefly indicating their roles and responsibilities. (10 marks)
b)
Discuss the various legal and ethical challenges that arise in the design and management of information systems in the context of organizational decision making. (10 marks)
