(a) (i) Explain the difference between computer hardware and computer software. (2 marks)
(ii) Fred is first year student taking computer science and wants to buy a lap top for his use. State two factors he should consider when buying the laptop. (2 marks)
(iii) State two advantages of fiber optic compared to copper cable as a transmission medium. (2 marks)

(b) Describe the use of computers in the following areas:
(i) education and research;
(ii) hospitals.

(c) (i) Distinguish between SRAM and DRAM. (2 marks)

(ii) Describe each of the following levels of programming languages:

(ii) A newspaper publishing company intends to buy four computers so as to improve
its business. Outline three factors the company will consider other than cost.

(iii) Distinguish between a scanner and a plotter in terms of functionality. (2 marks)
(iv) Explain two advantages of off-the shelf software over tailor-made software.

(b) You are a supervisor of the ICT department in your company. Explain four factors that you will consider when selecting the application software for the company.(4marks)

The manager of a recently established vernacular radio station attended an ICT seminar at SEKU. One of the main topics covered during the seminar was “operating system”. He would like other staff members to go through the same internally before computerizing operations in the organization. He has approached you as a young graduate from college to assist him in preparing a presentation on the topic using PowerPoint on the topic “Operating System”.

(ii) Giving an example in each, differentiate between single tasking operating system and multitasking operating system. (4 marks)
(iii) Describe any three functions of operating system. (3 marks)
