INSTRUCTIONS
This paper contains FIVE questions. Attempt THREE questions only.

Question 1
(a)
Discuss the mechanism of working of a stabilization pond. [10 marks]
(b)
Design an oxidation pond for treating sewage from a hot climate country with 5000 persons, contributing sewage at 120 litres per capita per day. The 5-day BOD of sewage if 300 mg/l. Assume the following:
(i)
Organic loading in the pond is 300kg/hectare/day.
(ii)
The length of pond is twice its width
(iii)
Effective depth is 1.2m
[10 marks]

Question 2
(a)
Describe in detail dilution as a method of sewage disposal stating the conditions necessary for its adoption. [10 marks]
(b)
A town disposes sewage by land treatment. It has a sewage farm of area 150 hectares. The area includes an extra provision of 50% for rest and rotation. The population of the town being 50,000 people and rate of water supply 140 litres per capita per day. If 75% of the water is converted into sewage, determine the consuming capacity of the soil. [10 marks]

Question 3
What is the purpose of sludge digestion? Describe the uses and biological process for anaerobic and aerobic digestion. [20 marks]

Question 4
A city discharges 100 cumecs of sewage into a river, which is fully saturated with oxygen and flowing at the rate of 1500 cumecs during its lean days with a velocity of 0.1ms-1. The 5-days BOD of sewage at the given temperature is 280 mg/l. Find when and where the critical DO deficit will occur in the downstream portion of the river, and what is its amount. Assume coefficient of purification of the stream (f) as 0.4 and coefficient of de- oxygenation (KD) as 0.1. [20 marks]

Question 5
Describe in detail the general guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment Document for a sewage treatment plant for a city with over one million inhabitants. [20 marks]
