INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions.
QUESTION 1
a)
Differentiate the following terms
i)
Laminar and Turbulent flow.
ii)
Uniform and non uniform flows
b)
If the velocity in 12mm pipe is 0.5m/s, what is the velocity in a 3mm diameter jet issuing from a nozzle attached to the pipe?

QUESTION 2
a)
A symmetrical nozzle has water flowing downwards at a rate of 0.034m3/s and fitted with a circular end pipe. Area at the inlet of the nozzle is 1.85 x 10-2m2. Pressure at the inlet is 2.55x104 NM-2 and the discharge is at atmospheric pressure = 0 Volume of the water contained in the nozzle is 1.66x10-3 m3
b)
Calculate the total head of flow at the entry and exit of the nozzle described above. If the inlet of the nozzle is 0.17m above its exit.
c)
Comment on the applicability of Bernoulli’s equation.

QUESTION 3
With reference to the diagram below derive the basic equation for a hydraulic jump from
1st principle

QUESTION 4
By use of specific gravity diagram differentiate
i)
Subcritical flow
ii)
Supercritical flow

QUESTION 5
a)
Outline the limitations of Bernoulli’s equation.
b)
When 1800 litres per minutes of water flow through a 0.3 pipe which later reduced to 0.15 pipe, calculate the average velocities in the two pipes.
