Discuss the factors which are considered in the selection of the sits for a proposed dam. It is assumed that the type of the dam has already been selected for the project. (10 marks)

Differentiate between horizontal and vertical piping in earth dams. Suggest permanent measure to check vertical piping. (10 marks)

What are the different ways by which a concrete gravity dam may fail, and how will you ensure its safety against each type of failure? (20 marks)

Explain and elaborate the importance of seepage through earthen dams. (10 marks)

What precautions and remedial measures would you undertake to control the seepage through

earthen dam body
ii)
through the dam foundations

What useful purpose is served by a dam? What are the ill effects of dam construction? (10 marks)

Explain in details the various forces causing instability in a gravity dam. (10 marks)
