SIMULATION AND MODELLING (BBIT 417) (CISY 403) 1ST TRIMESTER 2014
KENYA METHODIST UNIVERSITY

END OF 1'ST 'TRIMESTER 2014 (EVENING) EXAMINATION

FACULTY : COMPUTING & INFORMATICS
DEPARTMENT : COMPUTER SCIENCE AND BUSINESS
INFORMATION
UNIT CODE : BBIT 417/CISY 403
UNIT TITLE : SIMULATION AND MODELLING
TIME : 2 HOURS

Instructions: Answer question one and any other two questions.

Question One

Distinguish between
Reliability and validity
(2mks)
Period and full period
(2mks)
Random numbers and pseudo-random numbers.
(2mks)
Highlight the steps involved in monter carlo simulation. (5mks)
Briefly discuss the following random number generators
The congruential generator.
(6mks)
The Ms Square generator.
(4mks)
The trustworthy generator.
(2mks)
The lagged Fibonacci generator.
(3mks)
Discuss the techniques commonly used in generating random numbers. (4mks)
Question Two

A bakery shop keeps stock of a popular brand of cake daily demand base on the past experiments given below:
Daily demand 0 15 5 35 45 50
Frequency 1 15 20 50 12 2

Using the following sequence of random numbers, simulate the demand for the next 10 days. 48,78,09,87,99,77,15,14,68,89. Find out the stock situation if the owner of the bakery decides to make 35 cakes every day. Unmet demand on any day is lost.
(10mks)
Highlight the factors considered when selecting a simulation language.
(5mks)
Discuss the areas where simulation is extensively used.
(5mks)
Question Three

People arrive at a bank to be served according to the following distribution
Inter arrival time 2 3 4 5 6
Probability 0.10 0.20 0.40 0.20 0.10

The service time is five minutes and there is only one serve. The manager in charge is interested in predicting the operating characteristics of this counter during a typical working day form 10.00 to 11.00. use simulation to determine the average waiting time for service and the average time a person spends in the system using the following set of random numbers: 17,86,84,70,55,8,40,91,37,58,71. Sketch the resulting waiting time and queue length. (20mks)
Question Four

A bank is considering to open a drive in window for customers services management estimates that customers will arrive at the rate of 15 per hour. The taker in charge can serve customers at the rate of one every three minutes. Assuming poisson arrivals and exponential services. Find
Average number of customers in waiting line
Average number of customers in the system and at the queue
Probability that there are atleast four customers in the system
The proportion idle time of the server.
(10mks)
Using the flow balance equation, show that the proportion of the time spent by a system in any state can be expressed as a proportion of time spent at state zero, hence stability.
