b. State two uses of magnetism (2mks)

4. A boy standing 200m from a large wall produces a sound clap. He hears the echo after 1.21 seconds. Calculate the speed of sound in air. (3mks)

5. Two pieces of square cross-section are joined together. The larger pipe is 0.02m by 0.02m and the smaller is 0.01m by 0.01m. The water flows once at 48cm3/second. Find the speed in each pipe (5mks)

6. A girl of mass 50 kg stands in a lift which has an acceleration of free fall of 10metres per second squared. The lift starts from rest and moves upwards as follows.

- accelerating uniformly at 1m/s2 for 5 seconds

- Then travels at constant speed for the next 10 seconds

- And finally decelerates uniformly coming to stop after a further 5 seconds.

i. Draw the lift indicating the force acting on the girl (1mk)

ii. Sketch the velocity time graph of this motion (2mks)

iii. What is the total distance this lift ascends during the 20 seconds (2mks)

iv. Calculate the resultant force on passenger as the lift decelerates (4mks)

7. (a) What is refractive index (2mks)

b. You are provided with five optical pins, a ruler, a glass block and a white sheet of paper mounted on a soft board. Using a well labelled diagram, describe an experiment to determine the refractive index of the glass block (8mks)

8. A uniform rod of 100m long is balanced by 60N weight at one end when the pivot is placed 10cm from that end. Calculate the weight of the rod (3mks)

9 (a) State Newton second law of motion (2mks)

b. What is the mass of an object which is accelerated at 3m/s2 by a force of 125N (3mks)

10. A stone is thrown horizontally from the flat roof of a building at a velocity 10m/s and hits the ground below after 10 seconds.

Calculate the refractive index of medium T with respect to medium M (3mks)

c. State two conditions necessary for total internal reflection to occur (2mks)

11. A pin is placed at the bottom of a beaker containing a transparent liquid. When viewed from the top, the pin appears nearer the surface than actually is. Explain this observation (3mks)

12. Draw a well labelled diagram showing how a magnified image of an object can be produced in a pin-hole camera (4mks)

13. Define refraction in terms of real and apparent depth (2mks)
