1. Answer all the questions in section a, b and c below. [30marks]

a) Write down the pronoun in each of sentence i-v and after it indicate its type.

i) Has anybody seen the car keys?
ii) Maria herself prepared every dessert on the menu.
iii) The person whom the director appointed had ten years of experience.
iv) This is number one on the best-seller list of books.
v) The dog saw itself in the mirror and started barking.


b)Write down the verb in each of the sentences i-v below and then after it state what type of verb it is. [10 marks]
i) Should I bake another cake?
ii) This has been a special day.
iii) Our dogs bark a lot at night.
iv) Redeem these coupons for valuable merchandise.
v) When will you be leaving?

c)Copy down the adverb in each of the sentences i-v below. After that state the word class of the word it modifies. [10 marks]
i) Magdalene often shops at Uchumi Supermarkets.
ii) The teacher was thoroughly disgusted with us.
iii) Please set the table properly.
iv)In the rainy seasons the grass grows too fast.
v) Fred was unusually good to the unfriendly driver.

2. Copy down the group of words in quote in each sentence below, then indicate whether the word group is a phrase or a clause. After that state its function in the sentence.

i) Susan was 'clever enough' to get a B grade in KCSE.
ii) 'What they said' made the principal angry.
iii) Can you tell me 'where the students are.'
iv) My grandfather built 'that factory'.
v) The dress 'which you gave her' has been stolen.
vi) I left Regina 'in the room' reading.
vii) Philip acted 'rather strangely' at he party last night.
viii) He will not come 'if it rains' today.
ix) I was not around 'when the visitors arrived'.
x) Christine was 'angry with her friend' about the delay.

3. Explain, using many varied examples, how morphemes affect the structure and meaning of words in English. [20 marks]

4. Describe English sentences from both the structural and the functional or semantic aspects. In each case give at least one example of the particular type of sentence you are describing. [20marks]

5. Distinguish between "substitution" and "ellipsis" in English. Support your answer with at least three examples of each feature. [20 marks]
