QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) (30marks)
(a) Explain the term “Chemistry Education” ( 2mks)

(b) It is important to link the classroom chemistry to industry. Discuss the industrial
importance of chemistry, giving appropriate examples accordingly. (6mks)

(c) What qualities are tested in Chemistry practical examinations (3mks)
(d) i) You are demonstrating the reaction of ‘sodium and water’. What laboratory
precaution would you observe (4mks)



ii) As you would to a high school class, write a complete symbol balanced equation
for the reaction between sodium and water (2mks)

(e) What disabilities may disadvantage learners in Chemistry practicals? (3mks)
(f) Gender is implicated in science in a number of different ways. Chemistry is perceived as
‘masculine’ in your School. Discuss and suggest how to offset this image. (7mks)
(g) How do chemists view the world? (3mks)

(a) What would you tell a teacher who uses a water- type fire extinguisher on electric fires in
Chemistry Laboratory? Recommend the correct fire extinguisher suitable for electric fires

(b) Mary is a form three chemistry teacher in Mogotio secondary school. She wants to organize
a class experiment in the chemistry laboratory.
i). State clearly the role of the teacher in the chemistry laboratory. (3mks)
ii) A student in her class accidentally poured sulphuric acid on her skin, how would Mary
handle/treat this?

c) Explain the following common incidents and what first aid you would recommend for an
accident in your school chemistry laboratory.
i) ‘Shock due to a serious accident
ii) ‘Eye injury’ due to a sharp objected entered the eye (4mks)
iii) Construct a sample of a laboratory accident form, by listing the important parts (2mks)
necessary

(d) What are the Chemistry teachers’ responsibilities in regards to importance of safety in (4mks)
the Chemistry Laboratory









QUESTION THREE (20 marks)

(a) The topic ‘Halogens’ is taught in high schools. .




i) A student in your class asks you, ‘Sir/madam, what properties of halogens. What answer
would you give? (4mks)
ii) Prepare a marking scheme for your answers above and show how you would distribute your
marks. Explain your criteria. (3mks)

b) Discuss the main factors for the teaching methods for the topic “Chorine and its uses” as
follows:

(10mks)
i) List the objectives learners are expected to achieve at the end of the topic
ii) What practical demonstration/experiments can be organized to show the properties of
Chorine?
iii) What are the advantages and disadvantages of Chlorine?
iv)“Water- Guard” is a product sold in the market to be used to purify water. Comment.

(c) Discuss the importance of a lesson plan for the above lesson (3 mks)

and justify why the various components are important.

c) Nancy is a chemistry teacher in Kabarak High school. She wants to prepare a standard solution
of sodium carbonate for a practical with Form three (3) students. She weighs accurately
1.3 g sodium carbonate and dissolves it in 250ml volumetric flask using distil water.

i) List all the apparatus she would want to use
ii) Prepare the procedure she should follow
Given molar mass of sodium carbonate is 106g/mol
iii) Calculate the number of moles of Sodium carbonate contained in 1.3g of sodium
carbonate
iv) Calculate the Molarity of sodium carbonate in this experiment. (10mks)
