a) Radio waves are classified into 3 main categories, briefly explain each of them. (6mks)
b) Derive the fundamental equation for free space transmission and show that the wave experiences loss
during transmission. (10mks)
c) Explain the process of contention as employed in wireless LAN Transmission (5mks)
d) Distinguish between point co-ordination function (PCF) and distributed co-ordination function
(DCF) (5mks)
e) Explain why fragmentation is important in wireless LAN transmission. (2mks)
f) Briefly state the parameters of the IEEE 802.11g for wireless transmission. (4mks)
g) What is QOS? Explain the parameters measured for the determination of QOS. (4mks)

c) Consider an indoor wireless LAN with fc=900MHz, a cell radius of 100m and non directional
antenna under the free space path loss model. What transmitter power is required at the access point
such that all terminals within the room receive a minimum of 10µw? How does this change if the
frequency is 5GHZ. (6mks)
d) Bluetooth is an ad- hoc net work used by most people to transfer data between two devices. Explain
the function of the following Bluetooth layers.
