DAY: WEDNESDAY DATE: 08/08/2012
TIME: 2.00 – 4.00 P.M. STREAM: Y2S2

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer ALL questions in PART ONE and any TWO questions in PART TWO
2. Any extra questions answered will not be marked
Part One

Question One (30 Marks)
a. Describe
i. Time division multiple access (2 marks)
ii. Frequency division multiple access (2 marks)
b. An organization has offices in two buildings at opposite ends of Nairobi. Each building has
a local area network. The organization needs to connect the two LANs to allow
communication between the users located in the two buildings. They want an affordable
solution, so they decide to use copper cable. They also want to limit the number of
amplifiers installed between the two buildings. Which type of copper cable would you use?
Give two detailed reasons for your choice. (5 marks)
c. Give two reasons why fiber optic cables are more immune to tapping than copper cables.
(4 marks)
d. An organization requires a wireless network solution for their offices which are located in various buildings in the centre of Nakuru town. They require a solution that will enable
them to place the antennas in their offices. They also require a solution that will enable
them move antennas without having to call in a specialist to re-point the antennas. John, a
network specialist, designs a microwave communication network for them.
i. Is John’s choice of network solution suitable for the organization or not? (1 mark)
ii. Give two reasons for you answer in (i) above. (4 marks)
e. Describe the stop and wait automatic repeat request method. (3 marks)
f. What is the primary aim of intelligent networks in telecommunication networks?
(2 marks)
g. An organization with internet access can use VOIP to reduce the costs of communications.
The internet connection can be used for both data and voice, eliminating the need of having
a different infrastructure for voice communications.
i. What is the main disadvantage VOIP? (2 marks)
ii. How can multiple protocol layer switching (MPLS) be used to overcome the disadvantage
given in (i) above? (3 marks)
h. Describe one way in which radio and microwaves are propagated. (2 marks)
Part Two

Question Two (20 marks)
a. Give two uses of cladding in a fiber optic cable. (3 marks)
b. With regard to laser diodes what is meant by population inversion? Explain why it is
required. (5 marks)
c. An organization uses fiber optic for its internet connection. The optical detector used is the pi-
n photodiode.
i. Give two advantages of using fiber optic cable. (3 marks)
ii. How would you modify the design of the fiber optic connection so as to reduce the errors that
occur in the data sent to and received from the internet? Explain your answer in detail.
(5 marks)
d. Describe how a light emitting diode works. (4 marks)

Question Three (20 Marks)
a. Briefly describe four processes performed by a satellite transponder. (6 marks)
b. An organization has branches in ten towns in Kenya. Their headquarters are in Nairobi.
They use an application which is very sensitive to propagation delays and requires
considerable bandwidth. The application is installed on a server in Nairobi and is accessed
remotely by the users in the other branches. Users from the different branches occasionally
need to communicate with one another.
i. Design a satellite communication network for the organization that will utilize the available
satellite bandwidth efficiently. (6 marks)
ii. Which satellite between a LEO and a GEO satellite would you use in your design? Give two
reasons for you answer. (5 marks)
c. Describe the steps that you would take when pointing an earth station to a GEO satellite.
(3 marks)

Question Four (20 Marks)
a. Describe the main functions performed by VOIP protocols. (5 marks)
b. You work for a cellular telecommunication network provider. Users in a particular region
complain about the quality of service that you provide to them. They say that it has
increasingly become difficult to make calls or even receive calls. They claim that when they
attempt to make a call, they often get a “network busy” message. Preliminary investigations
indicate that the population of the region has increased tremendously in recent times.
Describe in detail what could be the cause of the problem and the measures you would take in
order to improve the quality of service for the users in this region. (5 marks)
e. Describe the handoff process (4 marks)
d. You are contracted by an organization to design a VOIP solution for them that will help cut
down the cost of making international phone calls. Each employee in the organization has a
telephone extension (tradition telephone). Currently the employees make international calls
from their extensions, via the PABX, using the public switched telephone network. Design a
VOIP solution for the organization that will enable the employees to make VOIP calls from
their telephone extensions. (6 marks)
