QUESTION ONE
(i) Mr zakaria is a graduate engineer in Electronics & Computers currently working as a project
manager in one of the leading software companies in Kenya. Zakaria was an all-rounder student
Who did exceedingly well in his studies as well as other extracurricular activities. Though he had
secured admission for MBA in Kabarak University due to financial constraints he took up a job.
He proved to be equally good in his job, assumed important responsibilities for the company
which he carried out successfully and rose quickly in the organization.
Gradually, Mr. zakaria began to feel dissatisfied with the work environment in general and his
own work in particular. Recently he told his close friends that he always wanted to for Masters
degree and of late he was feeling quite restless. His friends appreciated his feelings and
suggested that he should meet his boss and discuss the matter with him. On the following day Mr
zakaria approached his boss seeking advice to apply for leave from the company to pursue his
studies.. His boss was not helpful but discouraged him by saying that for a talented person like
zakaria a degree in management would make no difference and moreover the organization did
not have such policies of granting study leave. After one week Mr zakaria resigned.
a) Critically analyze the attitude and action of Mr zakaria (3 marks)
b) If you were his boss what advice would you have given him (3 marks)
c) With the help of the above situation explain the concept of “career management” and
its important both from the perspective of the employee and the organization.

(ii) “The recent technological changes have not only changed the way we work but also the way
we think and live” Critically examine this statement and illustrate the changing profile of a
new employee that the new technology is hatching in the work place. (10 marks)


QUESTION TWO

(i) Infotech Company is a multi-national company operating in various countries in
Africa, America and Asia. Taking into consideration that the company is globally
growing fast, you, as a human resource specialist what steps should you suggest for
the company to take in the area of Human Resource planning to become more
competitive and which qualities will you consider while selecting new employees for
your multi-national company and how will you prepare these new employees for
foreign placement? (10 marks)

(ii) Critically examine performance contract and focusing on its demerits suggest ways of
making it more effective (10 marks)
