1. a) (i) Define matter and energy.
(ii) Explain the difference between mass and weight, stating SI units?
(iii) Name two intensive properties that you could use to distinguish between

b) Differentiate between the following, giving an example of each.
i. Homogeneous substance and heterogeneous mixtures
ii. Atoms and Molecules. (4marks)
c) Define the terms
i. Mole
ii. Molar mass
iii. Avogadro’s number (3marks)
d) Answer the following questions for the balanced equation
2H20(l) gives 2H2(g) + O2(g)
i) How many molecules and how many atoms are in 2H20(l)? (2marks)
ii) How many molecules and how many atoms are in 2H2(g) + O2(g) ? (2marks)
iii) What is the quantity of carbon atoms in moles is contained in 0.20gm diamond (pure carbon)?
Given atomic mass of carbon is 12.00 gm. (2marks)
iv) A sample of sulphur contains 1.50 X1024 sulphur atoms. How many moles of sulphur atoms are
in the sample? (2marks)
e) i) Define an acid, a base and a salt, giving one example of each (3marks)

K+, Ca+ and Ga+3.
(iv) Compare and explain the relative sizes of H+, H, and H-. (8 marks)
b) Using the orbital notation, give the electronic configurations of the following elements: Na
(11), Ne(10), S(16)and Ca(20). (4marks)
c) Explain the nature of the following chemical bonds, illustrate by drawings
i. Metallic bond
ii. Covalent bond
iii. Ionic bond (6marks)
