1. (a) English language has eight parts of speech. With suitable examples, list and explain
them. (15 Marks)
(b) With suitable illustrations explain the following concepts in grammar.
i. Phrase
ii. Clause
iii. Sentence
iv. Predicate
v. Subject-verb agreement (10 Marks)

2. Mention the places of articulation of the English consonants with the corresponding
consonantal sounds. (15 Marks)
3. Draw and label a vowel trapezium, fill all the English vowels at their points of articulation.
(15 Marks)

4. Punctuation marks are needed to bring clarity to one’s writing. Mention at least Two
functions of the following punctuation marks.
i. Full stops
ii. The comma
iii. The colon
iv. Capital letters
v. The dash (15 Marks)

5. Change the following sentences from the active to passive voice.
i. I pray hockey
ii. She ate mangoes
iii. He will buy this house
iv. Polish my shoes
v. I gave him a shilling. (15 Marks)

6. A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun or a noun equivalent. Mention the English
pronoun in its subjective case, possessive case and objective case both in its singular and
plural forms. (15 Marks)
