Network System Administration Question Paper

Network System Administration

Course:Bachelor Of Science In Information Technology

Institution: Masinde Muliro University Of Science And Technology question papers

Exam Year:2010

SECOND YEAR EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
NETWORK SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION
DATE: APRIL 2010 TIME: 2 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer Question ONE and any other TWO questions
QUESTION ONE
a) To meet user requirements, a LAN needs to be planned and designed. Planning ensures that all requirements, cost factors and deployment options are given due consideration. Sate five major factors that need to be considered when selecting a device for a particular LAN. (5 Marks)
b) There are many reasons to divide a network into subnets. Outline any three major reasons for
subnetting. (6 Marks)
c) List four factors that have contributed to the success of Ethernet. (4 Marks)
d) Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is the master holder of the IP addresses. The IP
multicast addresses and the IPv6 addresses are obtained directly from IANA. Until the mid-1990s,all IPv4 address space was managed directly by the IANA. At that time, the remaining IPv4
address space was allocated to various other registries to manage for particular purposes or for regional areas. These registration companies are called Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). State the five RIRs and the regions they control. (5 Marks)
e) Describe briefly any four typical frame header fields. (4 Marks)
f) Hierarchical network design involves dividing the network into discrete layers. Each layer provides specific functions that define its role within the overall network. By separating the various functions that exist on a network, the network design becomes modular, which facilitates scalability and performance. The typical hierarchical design model is broken up in to three layers:
access, distribution, and core. Describe the components and purpose of each of these layers.
(6 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
a) Switched communication links can be either circuit switched or packet switched. Discuss each of
these switching methods. (4 Marks)
b) In order to choose the best technology to meet the requirements of a specific business it is
important to ask some questions to help choose a WAN connection option. State six important
questions you should ask yourself before making the choice. (6 Marks)
c) State the functions of any six of the most widely known and implemented TCP/IP application layer
protocols. (6 Marks)
d) A routing protocol is a set of processes, algorithms, and messages that are used to exchange routing
information and populate the routing table with the routing protocol's choice of best paths. State the
four purposes of a routing protocol. (4 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
a) Describe any four major benefits associated with hierarchical network designs. (8 Mark)
b) Compare and contrast 10Gbps to other varieties of Ethernet. (4 Marks)
c) Most modern Ethernet use switches to the end devices and operate full duplex. Because switches
provide so much greater throughput than hubs and increase performance so dramatically, it is fair
to ask: why not use switches in every Ethernet LAN? Discuss three reasons why hubs are still
being used. (6 Marks)
d) State two major characteristics of WANs. (2 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR
a) Explain briefly four benefits of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). (4 Marks)
b) Describe the steps followed when designing or modifying a WAN. (6 Marks)
c) WAN physical-layer protocols describe how to provide electrical, mechanical, operational, and
functional connections for WAN services. The WAN physical layer also describes the interface
between the DTE and the DCE. The DTE/DCE interface uses various physical layer protocols.
Describe briefly any three of these protocols. (6 Marks)
d) Access points oversee a distributed coordination function (DCF) called Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA). Describe how CSMA/CA operates in wireless
LANs. (4 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE
a) WANs use numerous types of devices that are specific to WAN environments. Describe any four of these devices (8 Marks)
b) Describe the steps followed when correcting application layer problems. (7 Marks)
c) What five issues were considered during the development of IPv6? (5 Mark)
