Answer question ONE and any other TWO.
1.
Select ONE traditional and ONE Contemporary dance from Kenya and provide a
detailed analysis of both, based on FIVE characteristics.

(30 marks)

Initiation, naming, manual work and Religious practices are some of the activities
that employ music and dance in traditional Kenyan communities. Select any
TWO and explain the relevance of music and dance in the activities. (20 marks)
3.
With reference to song lyrics, Dance styles and Instrumentation, explain the effect
of change in Kenyan music from traditional to contemporary settings. (20 marks)
4.
a)
Provide FIVE reasons showing why knowledge in music is important for
writers of articles, reporters and presenters of music programs in the print
and electronic media.

i)
Name any one traditional instrument that has remained relevant
and is still used in contemporary music in Kenya. (2 marks)


ii)
Outline FOUR reasons indicating why the named instrument in b
(i) above has remained relevant.

With reference to themes, style, exposure and business opportunities, compare
and contrast the life and works of either Daudi Kabaka and Eric Wainaina or
Fadhili William and ‘Nyota Ndogo’.
