Answer question one and any other two questions.

Q1.
Nigeria is a huge country with may cultures and diversified artistic traditions.
Some of the most prominent artistic groups are: The Yoruba, Ife, Benin and Nok.
Identify and briefly discuss some of the outstanding works of these groups. Use
sketch drawings to support your discussions.

Q2.
The concept of the Ancestor and Ancestor-ship has permeated every level of
artistic expression in Africa and in fact in many other societies in the world.
Briefly explain the concept of Ancestor-ship and give good examples from
selected communities in Africa.

Q3.
The scholarly treatment of African Art is plagued with what we can call “Politics
of Knowledge”. Explain the term “Politics of Knowledge” and identify five
major problems in the research and documentation of African Arts that has
affected its status compared to that of European and American Arts.

Q4.
African Art is treated in an amorphous manner as far as chronology and
periodization are concerned. Looking at the way in which European Art is treated
in time zones or periods, you are requested to propose a similar periodization of
African Arts. Briefly explain or justify your divisions of the time frames. Give
good examples of works that may fall under each period.

It is a fact that East Africa has very little publications on the arts compacted to the
coverage of West and Central Africa. Why is it so? What are the most plausible
reasons? Discuss and give suggestions that can improve the situation.
