SCIENCE
COURSE CODE: ZOOL 221
COURSE TITLE: ANIMAL GENETICS AND EVOLUTION
STREAM: SESSION II
DAY: TUESDAY
TIME: 2.00 – 4.00 P.M.
DATE: 01/12/2009

INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer ALL questions in SECTION A and ANY TWO from SECTION B

SECTION A (40MARKS)

Q1. The following is the sequence of bases in one of the strands of part of a DNA molecule:
CAGGTACCTG. Using this part of DNA, Illustrate and describe the steps taken in the
assembly of a protein. (8marks)

Q2. a) What are fossils? (2marks)
b) Describe the evolution of the Horse (6marks)

Q3. Briefly describe the process of genetic engineering (8marks)

Q4. Three population of birds A, B, and C live separately on three isolated oceanic islands X,
Y, and Z respectively. The birds all eat insects and nectar, but have slightly different
beaks and plumage. The islands are set throughout the year by strong prevailing winds in
the direction of X, Y, and Z. Populations A and B can interbreed and produce a fertile
offspring. Population B can mate with population C but the young are sterile. Mating
does not occur at all between A and C. From your knowledge of the way evolution
works, explain how successful breeding occurs between A and B, but not between A and
C or B and C. (8marks)

Q5. Light Sussex fowls have mostly white plumage, and Rhode Island fowls have mostly red.
The character white- feathered (R) is dominant to the character- red (r). Explain why on
crossing Rhode Island cockerels with Light Sussex hens, all male offsprings have white
plumage and all females red. (In birds, males are the homogametic sex (XX), females are
heterogametic (XY).) (8marks)

SECTION B (30MARKS)

Q6. Describe the causes and significance of variation in evolution. (15marks)

Q7. Discuss Geographic distribution as an evidence of evolution (15marks)

Q8. Describe the genetic and biochemical defects that cause senescence in organisms
(15marks)
